The annual New Music Review presentation is a lively,fast-paced, informative, and practical session that is a regular feature each year at the Music Teachers Association of California State Convention. In this overview of new piano music, Gail Lew will focus on technical and pedagogical aspects of the repertoire along with ideas to promote artistic performance by students. Diane Hidy will demonstrate artistic performances of these new contemporary works at the piano. THE HISTORY OF THE PIANO DUET

Gail will trace the historical development of the
piano duet from the Renaissance period through the end
of the Classical period in this illustrative piano
lecture-recital featuring performances on virginal,
harpsichord, and piano. Included on the program is one
of the earliest examples of music written for two
people at one keyboard dating from the early
seventeenth century belonging to the tradition of the
Elizabethan virginalist school. The earliest
selections on the program will be performed on
Elizabethan virginal and Baroque harpsichord with duet
partner Dylan Snodgrass. Pedagogical works from the
period will be performed by students of Gail Lew Piano
Studio.

The program features compositions by J.C. Bach,
Tompkins, Turk, Diabelli, Mozart, Beethoven, and
Schubert. Admission is free.
